About this place
Presented with a deep pot of slow-simmered beef tripe and pork offal stew, the first thing diners often reach for here is the garlic toast. At Yamariki in Morishita, this signature motsu nikomi has built a devoted following for its rich depth and balanced finish. Dipping thick, toasted slices directly into the savory broth has long been the tavern's customary ritual. As the bread absorbs the juices, ordering a soft-cooked egg to break into the broth draws everything together, blending the comforts of a classic Japanese tavern with rustic European bistro flavors.
Alongside the signature stew, charcoal-grilled pork skewers (yakiton) are a core draw. Cuts such as kashira (temple meat), liver, and shiro (intestine) can be ordered seasoned with salt or brushed with tare glaze, pairing naturally with draught beer, chuhai, and sake. The rest of the menu reveals an intriguing spread of European-influenced bites: pork and chicken liver terrine, Comte cheese, and a house-smoked platter appear alongside traditional izakaya staples like tuna and scallion nuta (sweet-miso salad) and vinegared kohada. With wine and spirits also available, diners can steer their pairings in whatever direction suits the evening.
A lively dining room holds counter seating as well as tables, suited equally to a quick drink after work or an unhurried dinner with friends. The shop opens at 17:00 and closes on Sundays. Reserving in advance is recommended for busy evenings. Steaming bowls of nikomi, crisp garlic toast, and freshly grilled skewers make Yamariki a classic stop in Tokyo's downtown shitamachi neighborhood.
